Olympus AZ-1 Zoom Review

I’ve been really determined to go back to my roots with photography and rekindle the wonderment I had when everything was new, so I’ve been picking up and shooting on a few old 35mm film cameras. I picked up this Olympus AZ-1 Zoom from eBay for £3.99. I had no idea whether it was any good, or even if it would actually work, but for that price it was worth the risk.

First retailing in 1987, the AZ-1 Zoom was Olympus’ first compact camera to feature an integrated zoom lens. For a point and shoot camera, it was pretty advanced, with a macro mode, continuous shooting, and a viewfinder that zoomed along with the lens.

Decisions Decisions - Smart Phones and Ecosystems

I’m in a quandary! We live in a connected smart phone world and the device you choose, is the one you’re going to have to live with day in and day out, come rain or shine… so it’s important to make the right decision!

I’ve always been an iPhone guy. I had the LG Prada phone back in 2007, before the iPhone was released in the UK, and then since then, I’ve only ever had Apple products. Obviously I’ve been aware of other brands of device, but I’ve never really been interested in them… until now!

Are old digital cameras still viable in 2018? - Canon Powershot S2 IS

The Canon Powershot S2 IS is a bit of a key moment in my photography history. Despite having used SLR’s with film, my digital camera journey by 2005 had limited me in terms of versatility and creativity. I had been using my Fuji FinePix 2800 Zoom up until this point, which wasn’t the best, albeit ok for the time. Back then I was working as a graphic designer, having not yet realised that photography was my true passion. My then boss Nick, who hired me because he loved photography and I had a whole section of my design portfolio full of photos decided that for ‘work purposes’ we should take a day trip to the NEC to Focus on Imaging.

Whilst wandering around the vast halls of the NEC and marvelling at a world I knew little about, I ended up impulse buying the Canon Powershot S2 IS at some sort of discounted show price, but I forget how much I actually paid.

Olympus AF-10 Red 35mm Vintage Camera (1987)

I was hoping this was going to be a review of awesomeness! The latest in a long line of my many obsessions is vintage 35mm film cameras. I’ve been scouring ebay, market stalls and charity shops for the past few weeks, as well as watching youtube videos on the world of analogue photography in 2018. It’s been really fun!

One of my latest finds, got me super excited. I picked up this Olympus AF-10 on ebay for not too much money, but unlike the vast majority of them out there, this one was red!

Toshiba PDR-M60 Review (2000)

The Toshiba PDR-M60 was my first ever digital camera. Up until this point I was shooting everything on my Minolta Vectis S-1 APS SLR, or using disposable cameras on nights out. One of my art college flat mates had a Sony digital camera that took a floppy disk as media storage, and as my course was requiring more and more images in digital format, it made sense to shoot them that way instead of going through the annoyance of film processing and scanning.

Minolta Vectis S-1 Review (1996)

Believe it or not, but this space age looking camera is actually over 20 years old. Not only that, but this was my first SLR camera, so is kind of an important landmark in my photographic journey!

For my 16th birthday, I was offered a choice by my parents, who both worked in aviation (hence my love of of air travel). They said in could either have flying lessons (in a plane, not as a superhero unfortunately), or I could have a ‘proper camera’. The Minolta Vectis S-1 was the result of that decision.
