Body Image Series Part 3 - How Losing Weight Changed Me

I’ve written about my ongoing struggle with my weight, and how I manage to lose 37lbs last year, but I thought it was important to talk a little bit about how all this has affected me mentally.

As I mentioned in my previous blog... I never considered myself fat, let alone obese. Sure I could do with losing a bit around the middle, but the realisation of my actual size wasn’t until I saw photos of myself. This knocked me sideways, and was made worse shortly after, when I went clothes shopping and couldn’t find anything that fit me.

It’s safe to say that my body confidence at that time was at an all time low. Overtime as I lost a bit of weight here and there, it improved. Then in 2016, when I decided to post more photos of myself on social media, it took another hit, because once again, I was seeing the reality of how I looked, rather than my own mental image. They say ignorance is bliss... when it came to my weight, this was definitely true!

Many people blame social media for all the body confidence and mental health problems in today’s world. I might be in a minority, but I disagree, at least for me anyway. Seeing photos of other people never made me jealous. It was seeing photos of myself that affected me, and it forced me to take action!

Blogiversary!

Despite only returning to the whole blogging thing a few weeks ago, turns out today is a bit of a birthday. My first ever blog post was December 15th 2007... literally 10 years ago!!!!

Now obviously I’m not claiming to have blogged consistently for the entirety of the past 10 years. I haven’t blogged at all (besides the odd Guest blog on other people’s) for he past 4 years, but it’s still kinda crazy to think about the idea of blogging being that old, when we still talk about it being a ‘new thing’.

Olympus PEN E-PL1

As a photographer, I take a lot of photos for work... obviously! Recently, I decided that I want to take more photos for myself, when I'm out and about. I've been using my iPhone a lot, with the associated hipster type apps, but I wanted something that was designed first and foremost as a camera.

So I needed a small camera. I looked at the multitude of options out there and came to the conclusion that it's pretty hard today to buy a rubbish camera. On that basis it pretty much comes down to taste... and my taste (especially lately) is very retro when it comes to my photography.

Competitions

Until recently, I've never been one for entering photographic competitions for the simple reason that any form of art is subjective. What one person likes, another person doesn't. A few years ago I entered a competition by accident and ended up winning. I had to attend a posh dinner wearing a suit, and go up on stage to collect my award from Philippa Forrester off the telly! hehe.
