Are old digital cameras still viable in 2018? - Canon Powershot S2 IS

The Canon Powershot S2 IS is a bit of a key moment in my photography history. Despite having used SLR’s with film, my digital camera journey by 2005 had limited me in terms of versatility and creativity. I had been using my Fuji FinePix 2800 Zoom up until this point, which wasn’t the best, albeit ok for the time. Back then I was working as a graphic designer, having not yet realised that photography was my true passion. My then boss Nick, who hired me because he loved photography and I had a whole section of my design portfolio full of photos decided that for ‘work purposes’ we should take a day trip to the NEC to Focus on Imaging.

Whilst wandering around the vast halls of the NEC and marvelling at a world I knew little about, I ended up impulse buying the Canon Powershot S2 IS at some sort of discounted show price, but I forget how much I actually paid.

NYC Behind the Scenes Video

I’m a bad youtuber. I know the key to growing on YouTube as a platform is consistency, but editing videos takes way longer than I can be bothered with. Capturing interesting video is also far more time consuming than still photography, due to things like alternative angles and b-roll being important to making movies more interesting and compelling.

On my recent trip to New York City with Olympus PEN, I was lucky that we had someone with us capturing some behind the scenes footage for us.

Olympus PEN x NYC

Back in May I found myself ticking off the number one place in the world I’d never been... New York City! People were usually shocked when I told them I’d never visited NYC. It was always somewhere I’d longed to see, but the opportunity just never came around until recently.

Are old digital cameras still viable in 2018? - Olympus PEN E-PL1

Moving on from the incredibly large Canon EOS 1D Mark III in my series of old cameras and their viability in 2018, brings us to the Olympus PEN E-PL1. Launched in 2010, it’s safe to say that this camera changed my life!

Back then I was using both a Hasselblad H3DII and the aforementioned Canon EOS 1D Mark III for all my work photography, but I wanted something for ordinary every day photos. Hipstamatic was huge at the time for iPhone, but I just wasn’t into using my phone for photography.

How I Edit Photos When Travelling

I love travelling, and I’m so lucky that my job has taken me to some epic places around the world. Obviously it’s important for me to have all the tools I need to do my job, but it’s just as important to be able to travel light.

Over the past year, I’ve downsized and streamlined my travel workflow massively, whilst at the same time, increasing my time efficiency, and I thought I’d share my process with you lot.

The Lens I’m Using Most Right Now

The lens you choose is important. It changes everything in your photos. Everyone harps on about wide apertures and depth of field, but the focal length you opt for makes way more of a difference in your images.

I usually go with small semi-wide lenses for most of my everyday Instagram stuff. Small, because it makes it easy to carry, and semi-wide so that I can get my dinner in shot, without having to stand up... I’m far too lazy for that!
