Top 5 foods I miss since starting the Carnivore Diet
Having been strict zero carb animal based carnivore for over 2 months now, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind about how much better I feel not eating plants. I’m actually shocked at my general mood, and how my whole stomach feels compared to eating normally.
Having said all that, there are some downsides, and the major one is that I’d had to cut out some of my all time favourite foods from my diet. With that in mind, I thought I’d create my Top 5 foods I miss since being on the carnivore diet.
So here’s a countdown from 5 to 1, including photos from over the years of some notable examples.
#5 - Pizza
Believe it or not, but pizza nearly didn’t make it onto the list. I was going to put cheesecake, or even just cake in general, but actually I have a complete aversion to bad cheesecake, so rarely have it when I’m in the UK, unlike good pizza, which is awesome whether it’s fancy or dirty!
My flat in East London is actually sandwiched within close (as in 10 seconds outside my front door) between a posh fancy pizza place, and a Dominos, so depending on my mood, my pizza needs have always been catered for.
More often than not, I’m a dirty pizza fan. Posh ones with loads of green on top are all well and good, but if you’re gonna be bad, be bad! Oh and yes, I’m a fan of pineapple on pizza. It’s a controversial subject, but I feel I’ve kept it secret long enough!
#4 - Yoghurt & Berries
This is the only so called ‘healthy’ thing on my list, and even then it’s full of sugar. Although I’ve been intermittent fasting for a few years now, this was always one of my favourite easy breakfasts or just a nice snack in the early afternoon. More often than not, I’d combine raspberries and blueberries with some sort of yoghurt and then sprinkle goji berries on top.
#3 - Bread
I’m cheating slightly on this one and including ‘bread related’ stuff too. When it comes to bread, I love sourdough bread. It wasn’t uncommon for me to buy a loaf of fresh sourdough from St Sugar on my local saturday market, and then promptly eat the lot with a tub of butter. It was soooo good! Additionally, bread is a great base for awesome tasting combinations. I mean if you know anything about me, you know I love a burger, and what’s a burger without a brioche bun? Cheese on toast, eggs and soldiers, french toast drenched in maple syrup. Bread is amazing!
Aside from bread on it’s own, there are a few bread related things I miss too. Donuts, crumpets (I made my own giant crumpet once!), I mean technically, you could argue that pizza is nothing without the doughy goodness it sits on top of. What’s your favourite bread?
#2 - Fizzy Sweets
It’s funny, although I do like chocolate, I could probably live without it. I much prefer fizzy gummy sweets, especially fizzy cola bottles! I’ve always loved Coca-Cola, and switching to Coke Zero helped massively with losing weight initially simply due to the reduction in my sugar consumption, so it stands to reason that I would also love fizzy cola flavoured sweets. I’m quite particular though. I like the Haribo ones, but they’re by no means the best. Usually the best fizzy cola bottles in my experience are at the cinema. There’s something about them that makes me super happy.
After the cola bottles, I also really love things like Rowntree Jelly Tots and Fruit Pastilles and Maoam Pinballs, oh and those fizzy strawberry belt things, they’re amazing! It’s a wonder I don’t have more fillings to be honest!
#1 - Ice Cream
Pardon my language, but I fucking love ice cream!!! It’s literally one of my favourite things in life! I can easily put away more than a whole tub of ice cream in a single sitting! That’s probably not a good thing given that on average, a standard tub contains between 1000-1500 calories!
My favourite flavour to have at home of late has been Daim bar ice cream, but I’m also a fan of Mars, Flake, Coffee and Cookies & Cream.
Travelling to Italy is always great, because everyone knows Italian Gelato is the best! I’m a huge fan of Stratcciatella, but I once had Zabaglione flavour and it was a taste sensation!
A couple of months ago in New York, we went to a place called ‘Milk & Cream’. Whilst there I had vanilla ice cream blended with Fruit Loops, topped with gummy bears and Fruity Pebbles. I was in such a happy place!!!
So those are my top 5 foods I miss. I’m not gonna lie, there have been some moments over the past couple of months that I’ve almost broken, but so far the willpower has been strong!
I just hope it lasts, because I feel great right now!
